□ Name: Battler Ushiromiya
□ Journal:
whatisthismagicyouspeakof
□ Series: Umineko no Naku Koro ni (When the Seagulls Cry) [Anime Version]
□ Canon point: End of episode 26 of the anime
□ History: Here - at Animevice, but it’s filled with typos fffff
Here - Animelist also has a summary
Six years before the beginning of the series, Battler’s mother (Asumu Ushiromiya) dies, and soon afterwards his Father (Rudolf Ushiromiya) immediately remarries. This action leads to Battler feeling hurt and that his Mother was being betrayed. He abandons his family’s name for six years, but eventually returns. The actual anime picks up with him and his family going to revisit Rokkenjima. A rather large island that is owned by Kinzo Ushiromiyal the head of the Ushiromiya family. This is where the family has their annual conference. This year Kinzo’s children (Or rather Battler’s generation’s parents) are curious about how the family’s business and fortunes will be split among them. And this is also the first time Battler has attended since abandoning his name six years ago.
Initially things go well, and Battler is able to quickly rekindle a lot of the relationships with his loved ones. However, things swiftly starts to go down hill after the family is trapped on the island by a typhoon. A string of mysterious murders start to occur, leaving some to believe that it is the work of the Golden Witch Beatrice, whose picture plagues one of the main halls in the family’s mansion. In the end, the family dies one after another until only the grandchildren are left. Battler denies the witch Beatrice’s existence until the very end where she manages to be revived and kills the remaining ones who are left.
Battler, his cousins, and the “furniture” Shannon, and Kanon all appear in what appears to be some sort of meta-world or purgatory. They discuss the events that took place, and all come to the conclusion that the only reasonable explanation for the murders was that there had to be magic involved. And thus the killer was Beatrice. Battler is the only one who denies this which sparks Beatrice’s interest in him. She promptly appears and challenges him to a game. On each “game board” (which is really just a different scenario) he has to prove that each murder can be done by human means, which would deny the magic of witches.
This is the basic premise of the series and continues over the course of three different scenarios, each one revealing a little more about specific characters and occasionally pushing Battler to the limits of what he can handle. Beatrice repeatedly punishes Battler with trickery and sometimes by adding new rules. One such rule being called the “Red Truth” which at first puts him at a large disadvantage against the witch. At several points Battler reaches the end of his rope and is incredibly close to submitting to Beatrice, but always pulls himself back from ultimate defeat. Usually after hearing a tip or seeing someone’s resolve.
Nearing the ending of the series multiple truths are brought to life. Beatrice reveals that Asumu was not actually Battler’s biological Mother. And he also finds out that Kinzo, his grandfather, was already dead from the very start of the series, meaning that there was only 17 people in totl on the island and not 18.. During the final fight between the two, Battler manages to defeat Beatrice using his “Blue Truth” to pierce through her with large spikes. She accepts defeat, but asks that Battler solve one last riddle for her in her death. Battler agrees and that’s the end of episode 26.
□ Personality: To put it simply, Battler is possibly the most stubborn guy you will ever meet. He sticks firm to what he believes in, and will do just about anything he can to achieve his goals… even if it seems rather impossible. He rejects even the most blatant evidence if it doesn’t match up to what he himself thinks is true. In fact, the whole series’ premise is based around this fact. After everyone is brutally murdered (or is labeled as ‘missing’) on Rokkenjima it is Battler’s stubbornness that prevents everyone from entering Golden Land. And thus beginning his battle with Beatrice the Golden Witch who wants to make him submit to her and accept the existence of magic and witches.
But, even if it costed everyone their trip to Golden Land it is still safe to say that Battler’s reluctance and firm desire is his most important trait throughout his game with Beatrice. Because more than anything he wants to destroy her and free his family from her torment forever, yet, to do this he must sit down and witness his family members and friends being brutally murdered (and sometimes tortured repeatedly) over the span of series. Simply witnessing the things that Battler has would have been enough to cause most people to forfeit early on. But Battler remains focused and stays playing the game no matter how hard it gets for him or what impossible scenarios Beatrice throws his way.
That’s not to say that his will is completely unbreakable though. In the span of those 26 episodes Battler has been pushed to the edge multiple times. Once he even submitted to Beatrice’s will completely and became her furniture only to soon be ripped apart by her goat butler’s. He regains his will to fight only after seeing Rosa’s resolve to protect Maria and being disgusted with Beatrice trying to feed her body parts of members from her own family as well as the head of her own daughter, Maria. His other breakdowns happen in a similar fashion as well. Battler either loses his determination to fight or almost does until someone or something gets him back on track. And then he continues to attack at full force again.
After describing one of Battler’s most important virtues, you would probably think such a person would be a little difficult to get along with and highly opinionated. Maybe even a bit pushy. But the truth of the matter is, in normal social situations, this side of Battler is rarely seen. Usually he is rather laid back and easy to get along with. In a good portion of the anime he spends his time joking around with his cousins and generally having a good time with him. The only bad thing is that he can sometimes be incredibly perverted. And even being related to him rarely seems to save you from this fact.
When he first sees his cousin Jessica after six years, his first response is to greet her… and then promptly try to touch her crest. He does the same exact thing with Shannon not long after that. At one point in the series he even tells Maria that she is ten years too young to tell someone to eat her. But then makes her promise to tell him to do that in ten years. In instances like this, Battler dips into the rather creepy side of the perverted pool, but luckily these instances are always light-hearted in nature.
While Battler can be brash and can easily push back if he’s pressed too hard, he is revealed to be a very caring person. He has a strong love for those he considers his family as well as his friends. They are also often times his inspiration to keep going in his battle against Beatrice. He draws strength from them. But, sometimes his good-hearted nature can cause him to be deceived. At one point Beatrice almost managed to trick him with a tsundere act to get him to submit and finally accept her as a witch by writing it on paper. It was only because of Ange that he was saved and could continue the game. But, it’s still a great example since even despite the fact that she had murdered his family members and friends repeatedly, he was still willing to believe that there could be some good in her. At the end of the anime when he finally kills her, he even accepts the responsibility of solving her last riddle. And thus starting a whole new game between the two.
□ Age: 18
□ Gender: Male
□ Appearance:
□ Abilities/Powers: Abilities wise, Battler isn’t all that spectacular. He has an average build for his age, and can probably do anything physically that anyone within his age bracket can. However, because of his stubbornness to not believe in magic he has a complete immunity to anything magical. He has an anti-magic barrier that surrounds him, making him a natural enemy to witches or anything that relies on magical abilities. His magical resistance is 999999999 or otherwise referred to as Endless Nine.
□ Personal Items:
Picture frame of him and his family
Ange’s cheap hair accessory
□ First Person Sample: [The video is going to start with Battler sitting down at a table of sort. His fists are resting on top of it, being clinched tightly as he curses lightly in whispers. Though it’s probably clear what he’s saying to anyone watching.]
Dammit… Dammit… Dammit. [He stops for a second though and then just let’s out a small sigh and relaxes his fists just a little. He might as well at least try this whole chip thing out to see if there was any truth to it. He might not have believed in witches and magic but at least a microchip was logical and could be did by human means.] O-oi. Can anyone actually… I mean can anyone hear—
[He cuts himself off there and one of the hands that’s on the table comes up to smack himself in the face with a facepalm. He closes his eyes to do it though, so the whole video goes black for a second.]
Ugh, I feel like an idiot. How am I supposed to believe that I can just talk to anyone in the cit by using some sort of weird chip in my brain? It might not be as illogical as the idea of witches but… [His sentence trails off from there. And soon, his eyes reopen and he tries this whole thing again.]
Ahh, that’s no good. That’s no good at all... I’m sorry about all the outbursts. My name is Battler. Battler Ushiromiya. And I’m new to the city. It’d be a lie to say I wanted to be here, but I guess that goes for everyone, eh? […] Does anyone else here believe in the story that they tell us when we arrive? About some sort of magical inter-dimensional portal and that there’s no way to get back? Heh. Whoever came up with this place must be an awfully bad liar… Because I don’t buy any of that crap!
□ Third Person Sample:
Battler laid there in his apartment bed, his hands behind his head and his eyes fixated on the numerous patterns across the ceiling. Usually he never had much trouble sleeping before. Sure he never really slept once all the murders started on Rokkenjima, but that was to be expected. And unlike back then, this time wasn’t really out of fear or anything like that. He just felt… odd. Like he wasn’t sure how to pinpoint what exactly he was feeling. He had thought that after he defeated Beatrice and solved her little riddle he could go back to having a somewhat normal life and forget about the “existence” of witches.
But now it seems like he was thrown into a whole new scenario with brand new rules. A scenario that was going to set him back even further. And this time, he didn’t even have a clue about who the culprit was at all. He frowns a little and curses a few times under his breath. How much more of this bullshit was he going to have to put up with? If he can’t get back… he might not ever be able to reunite with Ange. After all, he was the only one who could save her right?
Dammit… He rolls over, hoping that maybe lying on his side would help things. But it really doesn’t. Not with everything that was currently on his mind. Another thing that felt strange was that… this was the first time he had ever really been on his own. Like his own apartment, his own bed. He honestly wasn’t sure how much of this crap he believed or if this world even really existed, but for now it felt like it did. And he felt like he was completely by himself. Which was a rather empty and lonely feeling. Only made worse by the fact that he had never been on his own before.
During his whole life he either lived with his parents or grandparents. Hell, even when the family was attending the annual conference he slept in the same room with all of his cousins. So this whole ordeal… it was new to say the least. And he didn’t like any of it. He didn’t know how but he was going to find a way to get the hell out of here and finally solve Beatrice’s last riddle so he could finish her off.
